Our Lady's Abingdon - Lower School Library

Lower School Library

The Lower School library is a pleasant, quiet area within the school, with beanbags to curl up on and enjoy a book and desk space for working at. We have an excellent range of up-to-date and classic fiction for pupils to choose from. In addition, there is a reference library of colourful, appealing non-fiction books.

All classes have a timetabled session in the library each week, but can use the library whenever they need to change a reading book or find information about their latest topic.

The library is run by our Head of English, who also organises lots of exciting events throughout the year to promote the enjoyment of reading. In addition to our annual Book Week, with author events, competitions and activities, we take part in the annual international Kids’ Lit Quiz. We also participate in the Oxfordshire Book Awards, giving our pupils the chance to read and vote on their favourite books of the year and then meet the authors at a local prizegiving event.

Roald Dahl day is another chance to celebrate reading each year. We run clubs which encourage reading for pleasure, such as storytelling, storythinking and a book club which meets in the library. We also organise an annual Scholastic Book Fayre which gives pupils and parents the chance to browse and buy from the latest releases in fiction and non-fiction for children, and always creates a buzz around books!

Each year some keen readers are selected from Year 5 or 6 children to act as school librarians, helping the Head of English to keep the library tidy and encourage others to enjoy books.
